NEW YORK — It’s official: Barry Trotz has his ring.
Trotz, associate coach Lane Lambert and director of goaltending Mitch Korn came to the Washington Capitals’ dressing room before Monday night’s game against Trotz’s New York Islanders. There, the Capitals presented the trio of coaches with their long-anticipated Stanley Cup rings.
The Capitals released a video of the moment on social media. At the beginning, Trotz can be heard telling current Capitals coach Todd Reirden, “Give me a hug, bud.”
“I’m looking forward to a couple things,” Trotz told the room. “I’m looking forward to the reunions and all the great stories. The one thing that you guys said, and I said it today to the media: You guys were so resilient as a group over the years. The pressures in that were real and you fought through that. That’s the most proud I am of you guys.”

It was a rare moment of a head coach entering an opposing team’s locker room, albeit for a very good reason. But Trotz made it clear he harbored no ill will toward the people in the Capitals’ room.
“We were resilient (expletive) champions,” Trotz said. “And I think (T.J. Oshie) and you guys said it: You can do it again, too. You’ll have to go through an Island, OK? But you guys can do it again and I sincerely say that.”
Trotz concluded by saying it’s “going to be real hard to not like you guys” as an opposing coach.
“It really is. Because you’re always family,” he said.
Lambert and Korn, two key assistant coaches, followed Trotz to the Islanders and also partook in the pre-game reunion.
“You guys did it for us coaches,” Lambert said. “You guys put in the hard work and the sacrifice. We asked you to block shots and do all that (expletive). You did it and as a result, we’re all champions, so thank you guys.”
“Hockey is a game of people, not pucks,” Korn said. “Pucks are things. This is a thing. I’m thrilled to have it, and thanks to everybody for making this possible. But this thing is all about the memories, the relationships, the friendships we’ve developed.”
