COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Court records say a South Carolina prosecutor and Air National Guard member is accused of embezzling more than $7,000 in Guard funds.
News outlets report federal prosecutors make the allegations against 5th Circuit Solicitor Dan Johnson in records released Monday.
Prosecutors say Johnson between 2016-17 accepted reimbursements from the Guard for travel and lodging expenses he didn’t personally cover. Prosecutors say he charged Guard expenses to his government credit card as solicitor then pocketed reimbursements from the Guard.
The U.S. Attorney’s office in Columbia last week announced a grand jury indicted Johnson on charges including giving false statements, using federal funds for personal gain and obstruction of justice.
Johnson is suspended from his job as chief prosecutor for Richland and Kershaw counties.
News outlets’ efforts to contact Johnson for comment were unsuccessful.
