GREECE, N.Y. (AP) - Forty years after a fire tore through a suburban Rochester hotel, killing 10 people, authorities say they’re no closer to determining whether the blaze was intentionally set.
The 90-room Holiday Inn in the town of Greece was filled with about 200 guests during the early-morning fire on Nov. 26, 1978. The blaze started in a first-floor stairwell storage area and quickly spread to the second and third floors.
By the time firefighters doused the flames two hours later, 10 people were dead, including three Canadians.
The Democrat and Chronicle reports that authorities still aren’t certain how the fire started.
Although police say they have enough evidence pointing to an arson suspect, prosecutors say they can’t take the case to a grand jury with questions still surrounding the fire’s origins.
