ST. GEORGE, Maine (AP) - Emergency responders escorted a commercial fishing boat to safety in Maine after it started taking on water.

The Portland Press Herald reports the U.S. Coast Guard and Maine Marine Patrol responded to the boat off St. George on Saturday around late morning. The boat requested assistance and a Coast Guard crew helped the 40-foot (12-meter) vessel and crew members to Tenants Harbor near the state’s Midcoast region.

A Coast Guard spokesperson declined to identify the boat Saturday afternoon because the response was still taking place. She says responders were pulling into a marina at 2:30 p.m.

The boat was two hours away from its port when it requested assistance. The Press Herald reports the Coast Guard only needed to stay at vessel’s side as an escort for most of the trip.
