RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - Vermont is getting nearly $600,000 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help children in foster care reunite with their families and caregivers.

The Rutland Herald reports the money going to the Vermont State Housing Authority will make nearly 60 vouchers available for families separated because of inadequate housing.

Kathleen Berk, housing program director, says 300 families currently receive rental assistance and benefits from the program. Berk said she had requested 100 new vouchers.

HUD’s Family Unification Program, the source of the funding, provides rental assistance to parents being separated or near-separated from their children, or funding to help provide stable housing for young people from 18 to 24 who have aged out of the foster care system.

The vouchers allow families to rent from private landlords.
