SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Planned developments in South Burlington, Vermont, have been delayed because of a moratorium on building.
The Burlington Free Press reports the nine-month moratorium passed earlier this month focuses on identifying and preserving open spaces. Under the measure, committees will create guidelines for expansion that take both residents and developers into consideration.
Former City Councilor Rosanne Greco says sweeping development at Kennedy Drive was a “wake-up call” for many residents.
City Councilor Meagan Emery says South Burlington “needed to take a pause.” Emery says she was moved by residents who were upset by building in South Burlington’s “Southeast Quadrant.”
City Councilor Tom Chittenden opposed the measure, saying it wasn’t an emergency. Chittenden agrees that open space is important, but adds that people need housing.
