PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence officials are scheduled to give a final vote on a zoning change to allow a proposed 46-story skyscraper.

The Providence Journal reports the City Council is meeting Tuesday to vote on the change for New York developer Jason Fane’s proposed Hope Point Tower. Officials gave preliminary approval last week to raise the maximum building height at Parcel 42 to 600 feet.

Democratic Mayor Jorge Elorza says he won’t sign the zoning change unless the city has final approval of the tower’s design and Fane contributes a feature benefiting the public.

The Democratic House speaker and Senate president are asking Elorza to sign it, to show developers Providence is a place to invest in.

Opponents say the project undercuts Providence’s zoning plan and luxury apartments ignore the city’s need for affordable housing.
