PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The mother of a woman who died in one of Maine’s deadliest fires is petitioning the city to build a memorial to the victims.

The Portland Press Herald reports Lisa Mazziotti says she wants the memorial to serve as closure and healing for family and friends of the victims.

Her daughter, Nicole “Nikki” Finlay, was one of six who died in the Noyes Street fire in 2014.

The landlord of the apartment building was acquitted on manslaughter charges, but served 70 days in jail over a code violation.

He has since sold the property to a couple who wants to build a duplex on the site.

City Councilor Brian Batson says he is interested in Mazziotti’s proposal, and he plans to discuss the memorial with the city Parks Department.
