ASHBURN, Va. — Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams had thumb surgery Thursday and will miss Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, coach Jay Gruden said Friday.
Williams, who dislocated his right thumb in last week’s win against the New York Giants, will be considered “week to week” moving forward, Gruden said but did not expand beyond that.
Williams traveled to Pittsburgh to see a thumb specialist, who determined surgery was necessary.
“We have no idea right now,” Gruden said of Williams’ timetable. “Once he gets back here we’ll further evaluate it and see where he is and how soon we can get a little thing on there where he can function.”
This will be Williams’ first missed game this season. He sat out six games in 2017 with lingering knee pain, which required surgery. During the Redskins’ bye week, the six-time Pro Bowler underwent another procedure on his knee.
Ty Nsekhe will start at left tackle in his place.
“He’s very much a starting tackle in the NFL,” Gruden said of Nsekhe. “He’s playing behind two pretty good ones and the reason we covet him so much is for situations like this. To have a third tackle like Ty Nsekhe is a luxury that not many teams have.”
The Redskins re-signed Nsekhe this offseason. The 32-year-old has spent four seasons with Washington.
Washington will also be without running back Chris Thompson (ribs) and wideout Jamison Crowder (ankle).
