ATLANTA (AP) - Authorities say a man arrested in a Georgia woman’s 1997 slaying was identified through DNA testing.
Fulton County Police Chief Darryl Halbert says 61-year-old Jerry Lee was arrested this week in the killing of 28-year-old Lorrie Ann Smith.
News outlets report Smith was shot to death at her home. Police say she fought back against her attacker, whose blood was found at the scene. Evidence was sent to a DNA testing company, which found a similar strand of DNA in their system from someone who was trying to find out about their ancestry. The DNA was connected to one of Lee’s relatives.
Police obtained a warrant to get Lee’s DNA and traveled to his Alabama home. Detectives say it was a match. It’s unclear if Lee has a lawyer.
