Former Republican Sen. John W. Warner has once again crossed party lines to endorse Democrat Abigail Spanberger in her tight race against GOP Rep. Dave Brat in Virginia’s 7th Congressional District.

Mr. Warner this week also threw his support behind Leslie Cockburn’s quest for the open seat in the 5th Congressional District, where the Democrat is running against Republican Denver Riggleman.

Mr. Warner, 91, said that Mrs. Spanberger, a former CIA agent, brings “a strong understanding of the complex world beyond our nation’s shores and how that impacts the economy and jobs right here in central Virginia.”

“Abigail has spent her career serving on the front-line to keep our country safe,” he said. “If elected as a member of Congress, she needs no ’on the job training’in how to defend our fellow citizens and strengthen our economy and our national security.”

The race is considered a “toss-up” — leaving Democrats hopeful that they can flip the seat on their way to capturing control of the House in the midterm elections next week.

Mr. Warner has a history of endorsing Democrats. He backed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential race, and endorsed Sen. Tim Kaine’s re-election bid this year.
