FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) - One of South Carolina’s first female wildlife officers is retiring.
Department of Natural Resources Lt. Kim Leverich is leaving the agency in January. She says when she was hired by the DNR in 1995, there were only about eight women working as wildlife officers.
Leverich says when she started, a former officer always asked her to wear a mask so he could see the faces of people breaking game laws when they found out they were captured by a female warden.
Leverich also is a DNR education officer and says she will miss children the most, especially mentoring programs.
Leverich said in a news release that she and her husband plan to spend retirement working with children in schools around the Caribbean.
Leverich joined the DNR after six years in the military.
