NEW YORK (AP) - Freshman Jalen Cobb scored a career-high 16 points and his layup beat the buzzer to send Fordham to a 70-69 victory over upset-minded Columbia on Sunday at the Johnny Bach Classic in the Bronx.

Mike Smith hit two free throws with 13 seconds left in the game to give the Lions (0-4) a 69-65 lead. But Ivan Raut, with an assist from Cobb, buried a 3-pointer with eight seconds left to pull the Rams (4-1) within a point and set the stage for Cobb’s game winner. Raut picked up an assist on Cobb’s shot, which was set up by a last-second steal by Chuba Ohams.

Nick Honor paced Fordham with 17 points and five assists, while Antwon Portley hit three 3-pointers and scored 15.

Mike Smith led Columbia with 15 points. He added five rebounds and four assists. Reserves Jake Killingsworth and Quinton Adlesh scored 13 and 11, respectively.

Fordham leads the all-time series between the two schools, separated by 7.6 miles, 51-28. It was the first meeting between the pair since Columbia’s 65-62 win in 2008. That victory was also Columbia’s last win over an Atlantic 10 Conference team.
