BOSTON (AP) - Massachusetts gained an estimated 4,400 jobs last month as the overall unemployment rate dropped one-tenth of a percentage point to stand at 3.5 percent.

The October figures were released Friday by the state Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

Massachusetts remains slightly below the national jobless rate of 3.7 percent.

The preliminary estimates for job growth in October show the state back on track after an estimated loss of 6,000 jobs in September, much of that attributed to the end of-summer tourist season.

Labor and Workforce Development Secretary Rosalin Acosta says the state’s labor force is growing to meet the needs of employers. She says there are nearly 170,000 more people working and 5,200 fewer people unemployed than 12 months ago in Massachusetts.
