Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie threw a little shade at his Democratic successor Thursday night for the state’s inadequate response to the early snowstorm that blanketed much of the Northeast.

When Gov. Phil Murphy tweeted, “We will not stop working until our roads are clear,” Mr. Christie fired back on Twitter.

“It took me 5 hours and 40 minutes to travel from Piscataway to Mendham. #snowmess,” Mr. Christie said.

The commute is about 29 miles, and would take about 40 minutes in normal traffic conditions on I-287 in central New Jersey.

But conditions were anything but normal Thursday night and Friday morning on roads in New Jersey, New York and elsewhere in the Northeast. Some commuters reported being stuck in their cars for up to nine hours, as the storm brought more snow than expected and road crews in many areas failed to keep up.

“The storm was worse originally forecasted,” Mr. Murphy tweeted.
