OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - A judge has refused to reduce bail for a man charged with exploding a device that injured police officers during a protest in Oakland.
The East Bay Times says a lawyer for 23-year-old Giovanni Gaines failed Friday to get his $3 million bail reduced. He argued that Gaines had never been in trouble before.
Prosecutors say Gaines gave a 13-year-old boy an illegal, shrapnel-throwing M-1000 firework to hurl at police during a July march.
Four officers suffered leg burns and puncture wounds.
Surveillance camera footage led to the arrests of Gaines and the teen earlier this month.
The march followed a vigil for 18-year-old Nia Wilson, who was stabbed to death at a Bay Area Rapid Transit System station platform in Oakland. A homeless man is charged with her murder.
