LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) - The University of Wyoming has proposed dissolving its geography department and eliminating most geography degrees next year.

The Laramie Boomerang reports the university’s Office of Academic Affairs has suspended enrollment in all existing geography degree programs, except the geography minor for undergraduates.

According to the university’s proposal, the department has low enrollment, and “faculty resources are insufficient to support programs.”

Fewer than 20 undergraduate geography degrees were issued in each of the last seven years. One of the department’s graduate programs has not had a graduate since 2011.

The proposal states that all “tenure-track, tenured and extended-term academic personnel” are planned to be moved into other departments, and no staff positions are expected to be eliminated.

The university’s board is expected to receive a recommendation on the plan by March.
