LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky has announced the signing of guard Tyrese Maxey to a national letter of intent for the 2019-2020 season.

The 6-foot-4, 185-pound Maxey is rated as a top-10 prospect and the consensus No. 2 point guard by several recruiting sites. He averaged 22.5 points, 7 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game last season for South Garland (Texas) High School and helped Team USA win the gold medal at the FIBA Americas Championship last summer. Maxey averaged 8.8 points and 2.0 rebounds per contest despite missing two games with an injured right ankle.

Kentucky coach John Calipari praised Maxey’s scoring ability and said he can also rebound, defend and create shots for teammates. The coach added, “He may not make every shot, but he almost always makes the right play.”
