NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A physician and teacher who left a tenured faculty position 35 years ago to aid poor children in Peru is set to receive an honor from Loyola University New Orleans.
The Jesuit-run private university says its Integritas Vitae (in-teh-GRIH’-tahs VEE’-tay) Award will be presented to Dr. Anthony Lazzara on Friday.
A native of Tampa, Florida, Lazzara is a graduate of Tampa Jesuit High School and Spring Hill College. He received his medical degree at Tulane University School of Medicine.
In 1983, Dr. Lazzara left a tenured faculty position at Emory University School of Medicine to serve those in need in Peru .
He now practices at a home for destitute ill children near Lima.
