Outgoing Sen. Jeff Flake congratulated Kyrsten Sinema Monday night, after she edged out Republican rival Martha McSally to win his vacant Arizona Senate seat.

Ms. McSally conceded to Ms. Sinema after a hard-fought and drawn-out election process. The Democrat is the first woman and openly bisexual person to be elected as a senator.

Mr. Flake decided to retire in October 2017 and spent much of the time since combatting President Trump on a variety of issues. The president said at a recent press conference that he “retired” Mr. Flake from politics.
