NORTHVILLE, Mich. (AP) - A suburban Detroit community has filed a lawsuit to halt the planned demolition of a school building.
The Detroit News reports that Northville wants Northville Public Schools, its superintendent and the board of education to enter discussions with the city’s historic commission over the fate of the former Main Street School.
The lawsuit was filed Friday in Wayne County Circuit Court.
The school is in Northville’s Historic District and was built in 1937. The district hopes to sell the property for $1.3 million.
Superintendent Mary Kay Gallagher said in a statement on the district’s website that proceeds would go into its general fund.
Northville City Manager Pat Sullivan said the city “is not taking sides” and wants the school district to defer to the historic commission about the proposed demolition.
