GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) - R.I.P. Frank Underwood.
And Gaffney’s Oakland Cemetery has the gravestone to prove it.
Underwood, the ruthless politician who rose from House Majority Whip to president of the United States through treachery, deception and murder in Netflix’s hit series House of Cards, now calls Oakland Cemetery his eternal resting place.
Gaffney is Underwood’s hometown in the show.
The series’ sixth and final season began streaming Friday with Underwood, played by Kevin Spacey, mysteriously dead.
But it was no mystery to Gaffney marketing director LeighAnn Snuggs, who was contacted by Netflix officials in August telling her they wanted to find a final resting place for Underwood.
“They first wanted to know if we had a good cemetery that had the appearance of the series trailer,” Snuggs said.
She informed Netflix officials of several potential plots in the city-owned Oakland Cemetery near College Drive.
Snuggs said she picked an out-of-the-way spot in the cemetery that wouldn’t disturb nearby plots. The headstone, made in Georgia, was placed in the cemetery Friday.
Showing the popularity of the show, as of Friday afternoon, the city’s Facebook page had a couple thousand views of the grave site, Snuggs said.
A Netflix-hired photographer snapped some shots Saturday morning of series fans paying their respects to the fictitious character.
Snuggs said House of Cards put a spotlight on Gaffney with its fans coming from across the globe to see Underwood’s hometown. Snuggs said she expects the grave site to become a popular tourist destination.
Bookshelf Florist and Gifts will regularly put flowers on the grave site, Snuggs said.
The “president’s” obituary appeared in Friday’s edition of The Gaffney Ledger.
Image Plus and The Gaffney Ledger also helped with the project, according to Snuggs.
