ST. LOUIS (AP) - An employee at a Schnucks grocery in south St. Louis County was fired after initially refusing to issue a money order to black couple.
CEO Todd Schnuck issued a statement apologizing to Kellen Hill and his girlfriend after Hill posted a Facebook video about the confrontation on Monday.
Hill initially tried to use a debit card and a Florida license plate to get a $1,100 money order. The employee refused the request because Schnucks has had trouble with stolen debit cards and out-of-date identifications - often from Florida - being used fraudulently to buy expensive money orders.
When the girlfriend brought cash to the store, the employee continued to deny them a money order. Schnuck said the money order should have been issued at that point.
Eventually, the couple received the money order.
