MILWAUKEE (AP) - Milwaukee officials considering settling a lawsuit accusing the police department of stopping minorities without probable cause say they want to know how much the city will have to pay before they make a decision.
Milwaukee Common Council members who were going to vote on the $1.9 million proposed settlement Tuesday say the cost could be as much as $6 million. That’s because some money will be borrowed with interest and the city has to hire a consultant to monitor police practices for five years as part of the settlement.
The vote has not been rescheduled.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin sued the police department last year claiming the department had a stop-and-frisk policy that unfairly targeted minorities for years.
The police department denied the accusation.
