SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Salt Lake Tribune’s owner and publisher says layoffs are coming due to declining advertising revenues and shrinking circulation.

The Tribune reports that owner Paul Huntsman told the newsroom Tuesday that advertising revenues have decreased by 40 percent since he purchased the newspaper from New York-based Digital First Media two years ago. He says weekday print circulation has dipped to 31,000, down from 85,000 four years ago.

Huntsman didn’t say how many of the Tribune’s 90 staffers will be let go, promising specifics within a week.

He is the son of the recently deceased Jon Huntsman Sr., who founded an $11 billion industrial company. The family’s purchase of the Tribune brought stability to a newspaper that dealt with staff reductions and feared closure under Digital First ownership.

The newspaper launched a pay wall three months ago.
