NEW YORK (AP) - Many workers in New York City can now use sick days to care for anyone who’s like family to them.

The city noted Monday that an expanded sick leave law has taken effect. It passed last fall and covers many private-sector employees.

It also includes new provisions that let workers use sick time to get to safety after domestic violence, sexual assault or certain other situations.

In recent years, Arizona, Rhode Island, Los Angeles and Chicago also have passed laws allowing private-sector workers to use sick days to tend to what’s sometimes called “chosen family.”

So have Austin, Texas, and St. Paul, Minnesota. Millions of federal contractors also have the benefit.

Workers don’t get extra sick days, just an additional way to use the ones they have.
