Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz said Monday he is “very confident” he’ll be able to play Week 1 as he rehabs from a torn ACL.

“It’s a fluid process so you never know, but I’m doing what the doctors say and taking it step by step,” Wentz told the NFL Network of his rehab, according to Pro Football Talk. “There’s times you feel great and you want to push yourself but you’ve got to stay the course with what the doctors are saying. I feel really good and really confident for Week One.”

Wentz was having an MVP-type season until he suffered his knee injury Dec. 10 against the Los Angeles Rams. The Eagles went on without him and won their first Super Bowl by beating the New England Patriots, with backup Nick Foles taking MVP honors.

Foles provides the Eagles an insurance option if Wentz isn’t ready to go on opening night. Philadelphia did not trade Foles after teams didn’t meet their asking price.

The Eagles open their season Sept. 6 against the Atlanta Falcons.
