SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Memorial Health has announced the layoff of 85 workers.

In a prepared statement Friday hospital officials said the move was made to “strengthen the organization.” They also stated their focus is on “regaining financial stability.”

The Savannah Morning News reports the hospital did not answer questions as to what departments were affected, estimated savings costs or any future layoff plans.

Hospital spokesman Dale Hooks says workers who were let go were given a severance package to “smooth the transition.”

Hospital Corporation of America completed the purchase of the formerly non-profit hospital on Jan. 31. Under the deal, Memorial became the 13th HCA hospital in the South Atlantic Division serving communities in Georgia, South Carolina and Florida.
