BOSTON (AP) - Two large Massachusetts health care companies are discussing a possible merger.

The Boston Globe reports that officials form Partners HealthCare and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care confirmed Friday the two entities have been in talks for several months. Among the possibilities is that Partners purchases Harvard Pilgrim.

Partners is the Boston-based parent company of Massachusetts General Hospital and other major area hospitals.

Harvard Pilgrim is a health insurance company based in Wellesley that was once run by Republican Governor Charlie Baker. It has about 1.2 million members.

The Globe reports any deal would likely face regulatory scrutiny.

The discussions come as Partners is also negotiating with Care New England Health System in Rhode Island for a possible takeover. Partners also previously acquired Neighborhood Health Plan, another Massachusetts health insurer, in 2012.
