OPINION:
Mitt Romney, failed presidential candidate and former governor of Massachusetts, finally revealed the name of the person he selected for commander-in-chief at the ballot boxes in 2016 — his wife.
His wife, Ann Romney.
WTFreak. This is everything conservatives hate about the Republican Party — everything conservatives detest about the elitism of establishment-minded politicos.
And interestingly enough, it’s an apt demonstration of just why Donald Trump won.
“[I] wrote in the name of a person who I admire deeply, who I think would be an excellent president,” he told Deseret News, specifying his better half was his chosen one.
He acknowledged his vote was worthless — that it “wasn’t going to go anywhere.”
But then he said he believed he was “putting in a very solid name” — one, it seems, that would keep his conscience clear of voting for the actual Republican candidate for president, Trump, whom he had days earlier slammed as a “phony” and a “fraud” and a bit of a circus act who didn’t belong in the White House.
And now Romney, a Massachusetts guy, wants to win the Senate seat in Utah? On the backs of an endorsement from the very president he bashed — the very president he voted against in 2016?
In February, Trump tweeted this about Romney’s run: “@MittRomney has announced he is running for the Senate from the wonderful State of Utah. He will make a great Senator and worthy successor to @OrinHatch, and has my full support and endorsement!”
What would be funny — and entirely justified — if Trump, now that Romney’s ’fessed up to his 2016 vote, retweeted his original message from February with a slight edit, a slight adjustment, that reads like this: “Vote for Ann Romney for Senate for Utah. She has my full support and endorsement.”
Now that would be a tit-for-tat moment in the political world.
