CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A Detroit-area man will spend 17 to 50 years in prison for the death of a 3-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself with a gun he found on the ground.

WDIV-TV reports that Lamonte Johnson was sentenced Thursday. He was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and gun charges.

Police have said Cameron Dillard was playing June 20, 2017 with other children when he picked up the gun after it was dropped outside an apartment complex in Clinton Township, northeast of Detroit.

Cameron’s mother was nearby and heard the gunshot. The boy was rushed to a hospital by his parents, but later died.

Johnson of Mount Clemens later was arrested in Detroit.
