President Trump weighed in Wednesday on the Roseanne Barr tweet controversy by noting that ABC never balked when he was the target of rude attacks.
“Bob Iger of ABC called Valerie Jarrett to let her know that “ABC does not tolerate comments like those” made by Roseanne Barr. Gee, he never called President Donald J. Trump to apologize for the HORRIBLE statements made and said about me on ABC,” tweeted Mr. Trump.
He added, “Maybe I just didn’t get the call?”
Mr. Trump has often been the target of insulting statements on ABC’s “The View.”
ABC canceled Ms. Barr’s top-rated “Roseanne” show after she tweeted an insult about Valerie Jarrett, a former aid to President Barack Obama. She said that Ms. Jarrett, who is black, was from the movie franchise “Planet of the Apes.”
Ms. Barr tweeted: “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.”
The president avoided discussing Ms. Barr’s racist tweet at a rally Tuesday in Tennessee. The White House also declined to address it when asked repeatedly by reporters.
Some news outlets, including CNN and MSNBC, has blamed Mr. Trump for fueling racism in the U.S.
Ms. Barr has supported Mr. Trump, as did her character on the reboot this year of her famous sitcom.
The backlash on Twitter and the cancellation move by ABC was fast and furious.
Mr. Iger called Ms. Jarrett to personally apologize for Ms. Barr’s insulting tweet and inform her of the cancelation of the show.
