SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The Illinois Senate has again approved a prohibition on employers asking applicants their salary history .
The Senate voted Tuesday night 31-16 on Sen. Cristina Castro’s legislation.
The Elgin Democrat says the plan would benefit women. Women often have lower salaries over time because they enter and leave the workforce for family and other issues more often than men.
Castro says Illinois women lose $20 billion in wages over their careers because salaries are often based on previous wages.
Republicans say it’s a burden to employers and penalties are draconian. The Senate rejected a similar plan that had less-severe penalties for wayward employers.
Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed a similar bill sent to him last year. His spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday night.
