JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Officials representing several Mississippi cities and counties are seeking to build a wastewater plant independent from the state’s capital.
The Clarion Ledger reported Friday the West Rankin Utility Authority wants to construct the plant and end a decadeslong partnership with Jackson, which would cut off over $3 million in annual revenue to the city.
Authority director Bruce Stephens says its board will likely put the estimated $90 million to $125 million plant up for public bids at a June meeting. Officials say a lack of plant capacity to service their populations is among reasons they seek their own.
Jackson Public Works Director Robert Miller says the city was assured negotiations would happen, and giving Rankin and Madison counties more authority were among concessions under consideration to keep West Rankin’s business.
