SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - A man who nearly beat a woman to death must serve 100 months in prison for the crime.

The Spokesman-Review reports that Judge Kevin Korsmo sentenced Sonny Cannella on Friday after he pleaded guilty to first-degree domestic assault.

Before the sentencing, the woman, Sapphire Mattson, described the scene to the judge.

Mattson said Cannella attacked her in July, bashing her face into the kitchen counter and punching her repeatedly.

She suffers from brain damage and has problems with her memory and eyesight.

Mattson said she survived the attack thanks to her 10-year-old son, who called 911 and secured help.

Cannella read a letter to the court that said he was sorry for the attack and blames it on alcoholism and mental illness.
