PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The former treasurer of a Rhode Island police union has admitted to taking $31,000 of the organization’s money for personal use.

Authorities say 46-year-old Adam Conheeny of Portsmouth pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud Thursday at an appearance in federal court in Providence.

He was accused of taking $31,400 from the Newport Police Department’s union and using it on himself from 2009 through 2014.

Conheeny is a former Newport police officer but was not paid for his role as union treasurer. He is scheduled to be sentenced in September.

The former head of Newport’s police union was sentenced to six months in prison last July in a related case.

Christopher Hayes of Middletown pleaded guilty to wire fraud after authorities said he took nearly $72,000 from the union.
