ORONO, Maine (AP) - Tuition is going up a little less than 3 percent around the University of Maine System this coming fall.

The Portland Press Herald reports tuition, fees and room and board at the system’s seven campuses will go up by an average of $466, which is 2.9 percent. The numbers were presented on Wednesday to the finance committee of the system’s trustees.

University trustees increased tuition and fees for the first time last year following a six-year freeze. The community college system in the state is increasing tuition slightly, as well, following a two-year tuition freeze.

In-state university students will see tuition, fees and room and board increase to $17,986 per year in the fall. Out-of-state students would see an increase to about $54,000.
