NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A New Orleans doctor has been sentenced to eight months in prison in connection with a kickback case involving Medicare.
U.S. Attorney Duane Evans’ office says in a news release that 67-year-old Jobie Crear was sentenced Wednesday. He had pleaded guilty in April of last year to conspiracy to pay and receive illegal kickbacks.
Prosecutors say Crear operated a business called Comprehensive Nursing and Home Health Service Inc.
He paid kickbacks to recruiters who illegally steered people to his business so he could bill the federal Medicare program for treating them.
In addition to eight months in prison and another 10 months of home confinement, Crear has been ordered to repay more than $810,000 to Medicare.
