JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Students at a central Mississippi high school are mourning a classmate who died after her car hit a manhole cover and flipped on the way to graduation practice.

Eighteen-year-old Frances Fortner died Thursday in Jackson shortly after the wreck.

Motorist Kevin Curtis tells WLBT-TV that he had noticed the same manhole cover sticking up and had called the city about it less than an hour before the crash.

Fortner was a senior at Jackson Academy, and school officials say they will present her diploma to her best friend when the remaining students graduate Friday.

The street that Fortner died on had recently been resurfaced, and contractor Superior Asphalt had recently completed raising the manholes to match the height of the roadbed.

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba says the city is investigating.
