DENVER (AP) - The Latest on the police search of a Denver school (all times local):
8:50 p.m.
Students and staff are demanding answers after officers went classroom by classroom at a largely minority high school in Denver and asked teenagers for their IDs as they looked for a suspect in a shooting.
Several students spoke at a school board meeting Thursday night, saying the April 24 search made them feel targeted, disrespected and unsafe.
Mary Jimenez, a 17-year-old junior at Rise Up Community School, says some students stopped attending class after the search. She added that minority and low-income students are often harassed and not expected to fight back.
Principal Lucas Ketzer says he told police the suspect wasn’t in class but officers searched for him anyway. He also says police pushed a teacher away from her classroom after she said she wouldn’t allow them to enter without a warrant and pulled a gun on a teacher who went out a back door looking for students.
Denver police say that given the potentially dangerous situation and another school staffer confirming the suspect’s presence, they didn’t need a warrant. They say no guns were drawn inside the school.
