PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Senate committee has passed a bill that would revive a program placing bronze plaques at the graves of dead Rhode Island governors.

The Providence Journal reports the Deceased Governors Medallion Program started in the 1950s after a historian discovered a governor’s grave in a trash-strewn cemetery. That’s according to Judy Fardig, a member of the Rhode Island Historical Cemetery Commission who is advocating the legislation.

It’s unclear how the program ended, but the bill would allow the commission to reinstate it with funding from the Department of Administration. Fardig requested $10,000, but the bill doesn’t specify an amount.

The graves of all but two governors who died before 1958 have the plaques. Fardig says the program honors their public service.

The bill now goes to the full Senate.
