MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Democratically controlled Vermont Legislature has passed a $5.8 billion budget that faces an expected veto from the Republican governor.
Such a veto will likely bring lawmakers back to Montpelier for more work. Lawmakers returned to the Statehouse Saturday and worked through the evening.
Maine Public reports that Gov. Phil Scott said the lawmakers’ budget does not meet his no-tax-increase edict he issued at the outset of the 2018 session.
The budget would fund government through the middle of 2019.
Scott has also said he’ll veto minimum wage and paid family leave bills.
Earlier this month Scott proposed an education funding proposal that would use $58 million in one-time money to avoid a tax rate increase but legislative leaders say that’s fiscally irresponsible.
