BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) - A Beckley Elementary School kindergarten student may have the opportunity to have her artwork displayed on Google’s homepage after she was recognized last Thursday as the state’s “Doodle 4 Google” winner.
Landrey Gwinn is one of 53 winners with her doodle “Landrey’s Beach Gwinnspiration,” which was picked out of 200,000 submissions.
Google officials explained the Doodle 4 Google competition is a contest open to K-12 students across the U.S. to redesign Google’s logo inspired by the theme “What Inspires Me?”
Meghan Houck, Beckley Elementary’s principal, said Landrey’s father pitched the idea to his daughter, and said she knew exactly what inspired her most - the beach.
Landrey’s doodle features an under-the-ocean theme she drew straight from her imagination, highlighting sea turtles and a young girl swimming.
“The whole thing is just really awesome,” Houck said. “The Google officials kept giving clues about who won, but once they finally said her name, she was so excited.
“We’re all really proud, and if she wins overall, it would give so much to her and the school.”
Officials explained Landrey’s doodle will now be in the running to be displayed on Google’s homepage.
If she becomes the national winner, she will go home with a $30,000 scholarship and Beckley Elementary will receive $50,000 to go toward technology funding.
To help Landrey succeed, her doodle can be voted on beginning May 7. Those who wish to vote can visit http:www.google.com/doodle4google/vote.html.
With their votes, the public will determine the five national finalists (one in each age group), and Google will announce each finalist and the national winner in June. The winner’s doodle will go live on Google.com the day they announce it.
“We encourage everyone to vote for Landrey’s doodle, for as many times as they can,” Houck added.
Voting will last until May 21.
