LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Dry, windy conditions are expected to raise the wildfire risk this weekend in northern Michigan.

The Department of Natural Resources says the greatest threats are in the Upper Peninsula, which has been dealing with an extended dry period. But officials also are cautioning residents in the northern Lower Peninsula.

Officials say the fire danger is expected to peak Sunday, with winds subsiding by Tuesday. Those who plan to burn farm or yard debris must check online , since permits are issued only when conditions are safe.

The majority of wildfires in Michigan are caused by human behavior, with out-of-control debris burning as one of the big culprits.
