MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont is close to getting a law that would require carnival rides to be inspected annually.

MyNBC5 reports the bill awaiting the signature of Republican Gov. Phil Scott would also require inspectors meet standards outlined by amusement safety organizations. Under the measure, ride operators would also have to check the machines the day they’re used.

Republican state Rep. Dick Lawrence says the bill would ensure safety. Lawrence says legislators considered the bill before the deadly Ohio thrill ride accident in 2017.

The bill doesn’t include water rides, bungee jumps or zip lines. However, the Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation would be responsible for a report on summer attractions.

Both the state House and Senate have approved the bill. If Scott signs it, inspection requirements would start next year.
