MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Senate has approved a paid family leave bill that faces a likely veto from Republican Gov. Phil Scott.
The bill passed Wednesday would ensure employees receive 12 weeks of paid parental leave or six weeks of leave to care for a sick family member.
Those on leave would receive 70 percent of their salary, and it would be paid for through a .136 percent payroll tax. For example, someone making $50,000 a year would pay $70.
Businesses with fewer than 10 employees would be exempt.
Scott is expected to veto the bill due to his promise of not raising taxes in Vermont. It is unlikely the House will override Scott’s veto if that is the case.
