BOSTON (AP) - Over 300 activists in Massachusetts are using May Day to highlight what they describe as President Donald Trump’s attacks on workers and immigrants.
Holding signs reading, “stand with immigrants, refugees, Muslims, and all workers,” members of more than 30 organizations have gathered in the city of Everett following a march through the East Boston neighborhood and Chelsea.
Activists also are calling for an increase in the minimum wage from $11 to $15 per hour, paid family and medical leave, improved educational opportunities for immigrants, the adoption of “sanctuary” policies and an end to deportations.
May 1 is International Workers’ Day. Other rallies are happening across the state.
Representatives of labor, community and immigrant rights groups participating in the march are criticizing what they say is the Trump administration’s attempt to criminalize immigrants.
