DORTMUND, Germany (AP) - Germany forward Marco Reus has extended his contract with Borussia Dortmund by four years to 2023.

The Bundesliga club says Reus’ earlier-than-expected decision to commit to his hometown side allows it to plan for the future.

Reus, who returned to Dortmund from Borussia Moenchengladbach in 2012, says he “used to dream of pulling on the black and yellow jersey and playing for this club … I hope this sends a clear signal for the future.”

The 28-year-old Reus said Friday his decision was made in part to thank Dortmund fans and club officials, who backed him despite many injury setbacks over the years.

Reus only recently played his first game of the season after sustaining a serious knee injury in the German Cup final last year.

Since his return four weeks ago, Reus scored three goals and set up two more.

He has 92 goals in competitive matches with Dortmund.

Reus has nine goals in 29 appearances for Germany.
