OPINION:
There’s only one credible reason North Korea’s murderous dictator Kim Jong-un would mean what he says about wanting to talk with President Trump about denuclearizing North Korea.
Pyongyang must be so desperately close to bankruptcy that it soon won’t be able to keep the lights on.
The thanks go to Mr. Trump for getting the United Nations, including China and Russia in an extraordinary move, to approve economic sanctions and China itself for putting the squeeze on Mr. Kim.
If the communist North is about to go belly up, the Kim offer could be real.
But he and his father and grandfather have proven to be consummate liars in the past, winning concessions from us then thumbing their noses.
Mr. Trump did fine in agreeing so quickly to accept Mr. Kim’s offer to meet at a place to be determined. It’s only an agreement to try to agree on a site to seek an agreement with Mr. Kim.
Yalta would not be a good choice.
Mr. Trump has time to make sure he has the denuclearization deal in the bag before agreeing to meet publicly with Mr. Kim anywhere.
Trusting Mr. Kim to fulfill an agreement on unimpeded U.N. inspections is another problem. That, too, needs to be overcome before a public sit-down between Mr. Trump and Mr. Kim.
There is a great temptation now to pull off this historic achievement before the 2018 elections in the U.S.
For that reason, haste may be the administration’s biggest enemy at this point.
Whatever happens from here on out, what many of us would like to say now is, “Way to go, Mr. President.”
