CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) - A 28-year-old Colorado man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for raping his ex-girlfriend and killing his 6-year-old son.

Brandon Johnson was sentenced in Arapahoe County on Friday on several charges, including first-degree murder in the Feb. 10, 2016, death of his son Riley. In exchange for his guilty pleas, prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to an apartment after a woman called to say Johnson had sexually assaulted her at knifepoint and was threatening to kill his two young sons.

When authorities arrived, they found that Johnson had slit his son’s throat and then tried to kill himself. A 2-year-old boy in the apartment was unharmed.

Johnson’s attorneys did not dispute that he killed his son, but they said he acted impulsively and without deliberation.
